Waterproof vinyl flooring is the safest flooring for a basement in the Greater Toronto Area. It sits right over concrete, shrugs off humidity and the odd spring leak, and will not warp, swell or grow mould the way laminate and hardwood do below grade.
Basements are the hardest room in the house to floor. The concrete slab holds moisture, the air runs humid, and every few years a heavy thaw or a bad storm sends water across the floor. Rigid-core waterproof vinyl is the one product built to take all of that and keep looking good.
Why vinyl beats laminate and hardwood in a basement
Concrete subfloors are never fully dry, and both hardwood and laminate absorb that moisture over time, then cup, swell or lift at the seams. A 100% waterproof rigid-core vinyl plank stays flat through humidity swings, and if water does get in, you mop it up and move on. It clicks together and floats over the concrete, so there is no glue-down mess, and it can be lifted later if you ever finish the space differently.
What to look for in basement vinyl
- Rigid SPC core (stone-plastic composite), not thin flexible glue-down. The rigid core keeps planks stable over cold, slightly uneven concrete.
- An attached or moisture-rated underpad for comfort underfoot and a small thermal break over the slab.
- A wear layer of 12 to 20 mil for rec rooms, rentals and high-traffic basements, so it holds up for years.

Basement vinyl questions we get asked
Do I need a moisture barrier under vinyl in a basement?
For most GTA basements, yes. A 6-mil poly moisture barrier or a moisture-rated underlay over the concrete is cheap insurance against slab humidity. Our team will tell you what your floor needs.
Can I install vinyl over an uneven concrete floor?
Small dips are fine with rigid SPC and the right underlay, but larger low spots should be levelled first so the click joints stay tight. Bring a photo and we will advise.
Is basement vinyl cold underfoot?
Less than tile, and an attached or added underpad takes the edge off the slab. Many customers pair it with an area rug in seating zones.
